You Don’t Need a Mentor! (Though I Don’t Mind If You Have One)
I happened to read that Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, had Intel founder Andy Grove as a mentor, and I thought, “Hmm, it would be nice to have a mentor” – you know, “a guide or advisor in life.” Even though I feel that way, I have something to say.
You don’t need a mentor! (Though I don’t mind if you have one)
What do I mean by that parenthetical? Yeah, I think it’s totally fine to have one.
“I want to get back together. Heartbreak hurts so much. Love just isn’t working out.”
During times like these, what you want to lean on are the words of friends, psychics, counselors, coaches, and experts…
I think there are so many different types, and they’re all wonderful allies!
Meguru also looks forward to a weekly horoscope that gets updated every week ^^
However, if you make them into some kind of guru within yourself,
“Because that person said it, it will work!
But that person said it, and it’s still not working!”
You end up being “all about that person.”
Dependency means “to rely on something else and become dependent on it.” (From the dictionary)
Behind the cool sound of “mentor,”
there’s a magical power that can easily shift you from your own center to someone else’s.
When you get hooked, it doesn’t feel good.
Long ago, when Meguru was researching the subconscious mind, she often heard experts say things like:
“It’s totally fine if you just skip reading my blog.”
“It’s okay if you forget what I said. Go have an amazing day instead!”
Whenever I’d see statements like this,
“What?!”
“But you keep posting advice!”
I felt so confused.
It was like someone had suddenly pulled a ladder out from under me.
But what this really meant was:
You don’t have to depend on what I say.
Trust your own feelings more than what anyone else says.
“But I can’t trust my own feelings, so what trusted people say feels more important.”
Of course, I think it’s perfectly fine to rely on psychics, counselors, coaches, and all kinds of other people when you’re in deep pain right after a breakup.
But when it becomes:
yourself <<<<<<<<<< psychics, counselors, coaches
That’s when it’s like putting the cart before the horse – other people or external things become more important than you.
You feel so much better when someone else says “That’s wonderful!” and it hits differently when someone says “That’s not right.”
You’re constantly riding the roller coaster of other people’s opinions, up and down with their words, and when that happens,
I like to call it:
You catch “other people’s disease” and it makes you feel terrible.
As a side note, some of my favorite psychics and experts actually say, “Don’t call me teacher.”
I think it’s because when you turn someone into a mentor like that, it’s so easy to become dependent on them.
Is it a bad day if you don’t see your lucky number?
The same thing happens with crystals, good luck charms, and lucky numbers.
I think these things actually do have a talisman-like effect (Meguru has some super cute crystals related to her work, and I love visiting powerful places at shrines!). I think they’re fun to use as little guardians, but once it becomes…
yourself <<<<< crystals, good luck charms, lucky numbers
Then it’s easy to think the day you saw your lucky number was a “good day!” and the day you didn’t see it was a “bad day.”
It’s also easy to connect things like “I got back together with my ex because I saw my lucky number.”
It’s fine as long as those connections make you feel happy, but if they make you feel anxious or even stressed, doesn’t it feel like the cart is before the horse? Like, where did “you” go in all of this?
“I’m wearing my crystal, but it’s not working.”
“Even though I carry around these powerful good luck charms, I’m still not seeing results.”
When you think like this, there’s a high probability that you’re in:
yourself <<<<<<<<<< crystals, good luck charms, lucky numbers
I’m always number 1 in the zodiac rankings!
There’s one way to enjoy horoscopes without getting caught in that trap. *Ahem.*
You know those “today’s fortune” rankings?
The ones that rank all the zodiac signs from 1st to 12th place?
When I see those,
No matter which zodiac sign is number 1, I think, “Oh, I’m number 1 today too!”
I can already hear someone saying, “That’s not how horoscopes work!!!” but lol, it’s totally fine.
Even if you’re an Aries and Pisces is ranked #1, you think, “Hey, I’m number 1 again today!”
If Sagittarius is #1, you say, “Awesome! I’m number 1!”
Wouldn’t it be amazing if you could go through each day feeling that good?
So, this blog post is just one perspective, and I hope you take what resonates!
Have a beautiful day today!
